Does Grid Aesthetic Matter?

Are you finding yourself scrolling through Instagram, following through to someone’s profile and seeing a perfectly crafted feed? Maybe you have caught yourself questioning whether you need to be more intentional about your Instagram grid aesthetic. As with most things in life, whether you have a perfect Instagram grid or not depends. The short answer is that you don’t necessarily need a picture-perfect grid in the year of 2021.

From 2017 through to 2019, sharp departure, perfectly planned and usually in some sort of pattern (like a checkerboard) feeds were all the rage. Now a days, the ones that are attention-grabbing and meaty leads to more engagement, followers and healthy insights.

This includes the accounts that you stumble across and have yourself thinking “why did I not come across this account sooner?!” Maybe you found the perfect account for your new love of plant based meal recipe’s, or the account for the Instagram reels guru of our time (Burden Brand Management might be at the top of that list *wink, wink*). What these accounts all have in common is their ability to have so much great content, you don’t even know where to start.

Here is a list of what I added into my feed that helped me go from perfect grids that prevented me from posting useful content to analyzing each post on their own:

  • Info-graphics

  • Listicles

  • Reels

  • Videos

  • Quotes

  • Memes…etc.

These items got my account the highest amounts of growth I had ever had!

This variety helped me serve my audience better, but also helped me to communicate my message more clearly.

While mindful branding (cohesive colours, fonts, styles, etc) are important, you no longer need to worry about posting in a certain pattern or have that perfect Instagram grid.

So here is your permission to start experimenting with your content and leave the perfectly (checkered) Instagram grid behind.
